Remarks: This could simply be treated as an interlude of free material without a relationship to the chant or other model. Given the construction of the soggetto from two scalar descending-fourth motives separated by a third, however, this could be thought of as a free "re-splicing" of the chant segment consisting of two descending-fourth motives in succession. If this is indeed considered the source material for this soggetto, the second of the two motives has been shifted down one step.

Remarks: Both Morales and Josquin have the same variant form of this chant phrase: it looks as if Josquin "spliced" its first two notes one step higher, turning A-B-A- into the more interesting B-C-A-. (Is it also possible this was a variant in some sources of the chant itself?)

Remarks: This ornamentation of the chant motive does not exactly match any I found in Mouton, Josquin or Pieton, so it seems to be a borrowing directly from the chant melody rather than a polyphonic model

Remarks: The presentation of this chant melody is simpler and less ornamented than almost any other point where it is used in Morales's mass; consequently I treat this as citing the chant directly, although the rhythmic outline remains closest to Mouton's version of the same segment. The countersubject is the same one which appears in most complete form at the opening of the Credo, and in more or less reduced form at the openings of the Kyrie, Gloria and Sanctus.
